Longtime Thompson, Michigan resident, Elaine A. Hastings, 90, of Manistique, Michigan passed away on May 6, 2011 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 19, 1920 in Thompson, the daughter of Noel and Ella (Wilson) Hursh and attended school there.

On August 24, 1940 the former Elaine Anne Hursh married Harry William Hastings and they made their home and raised their family in Thompson.

Active in church and community affairs, Elaine was a member of the Thompson Lutheran Church and served as the Thompson Lutheran Church Sunday School Superintendent. She always ensured that everyone had a ride to church. She later became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique where she taught Sunday school and also belonged to the church women’s group (WELCA). She was an active 4-H Leader for many years and was a past President and member of the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 Auxiliary. In her spare time, Elaine wrote a weekly “Thompson News” column for the Manistique Pioneer-Tribune. She also enjoyed baking and decorating cakes and tending to her flower gardens.

Elaine is survived by her husband of over 70 years, Harry W. Hastings of Manistique; sons, Noel Hastings of Manistique, Frank (Diane) Hastings of Thompson and Boyce (Felisha) Cousineau of Colorado; daughters, Rita (Bruce) Rossier, Jr. of Manistique and Bonnie (John) Garvin of Manistique; grandchildren, Jackie (Ted) Hastings of Oregon, Noel (Nastha) Hastings, Jr. of Colorado, Brandy Hastings of California, Jamie Varbel of Kansas, Bruce (Amy) Rossier, III of Georgia, Noelella Rossier of Wisconsin, Beckey (Steve) Weber of Manistique, John (Patti) Garvin, Jr. of Manistique, Darla (John) Wood of Manistique, Chris (Rikk) Rambo of Traverse City, Aaron Cousineau of Colorado, and Renee Cousineau of Colorado; along with numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Noelella Hastings; and her grandson, Braun Hastings.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm, at the church with Reverend David Hueter officiating. Burial will be in the Thompson Township Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, to the Zion Sunday School program, or to the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility.
