James A. Zellner, 81, of 1796N State Highway M-94, Manistique, Michigan died accidentally on November 7, 2011 while cutting trees on his property in Hiawatha Township.
He was born November 8, 1930 in St. Germain, Wisconsin the son of Joseph and Marion (Allen) Zellner and attended high school in Eagle River, Wisconsin.
During the Korean War, Jim served in the U.S. Army for four years, seeing duty with the far-east command.
He later moved to Manistique and was employed at Manistique Papers for 37 years, retiring as a shift superintendent in January of 1990.
On September 17, 1983 he married the former Jeanine V. Weigandt in Manistique and they made their home in Hiawatha Township.
Jim was a member of the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 in Manistique. He loved being in the woods, cutting and splitting wood, riding his four-wheeler, snowmobiling, and having a good meal while visiting friends at their camps. He enjoyed his morning coffee every day at Vaughan’s Grocery in Manistique.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jeanine V. Zellner of Manistique; sons, James (Pam) Zellner of Colorado Springs, CO, Jeffrey (Carol) Zellner of Manistique, Keith (Lori) Zellner of Munising and Tim (Karla) Zellner of Manistique; daughters, Patricia (Steve) Ekstrom of Manistique, Nancy Rae (Ron) Irie of Manistique and Wendy Smith of Paynesdale, MI; step children, Wendy (Mike) Beckman of Manistique, Patti (Steve) White of Manistique and Paul Swanson of Chula Vista, CA; 18 Grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Joseph (Mary Ann) Zellner of Wild Rose, WI; sisters, Patricia Pride of Port Washington, WI and Lollie (Ralph) Kutcher of New Berlin, WI; sister-in-laws, Barbara Zellner of St. Germain, WI, Jeri (Darryl) Bertrand of Manistique, Jeanette (Roy) Landis of Cooks and Joann (Leonard) Lund of Swartz Creek; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandsons, Jeffrey Zellner and Robert Utter; a sister, Marge Jones; a brother, LeRoy Zellner; a brother-in-law, Jack Pride; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Weigandt-Cousins.
Per Jim’s request, private graveside services will be held by his immediate family at the Hiawatha Township Cemetery in Manistique with Celebrant Carole Cooper officiating.
